Former NFL executive Gil Brandt has opened the can of worms that many football fans have grown sick of in the past few summers. Brandt suggests that Brett Favre(notes) might return to the NFL once the lockout ends. According to Brandt:

“I do think Favre would be interested in talking to a team about returning. But I dont see a team out there right now that would bring him back as a starter.”

As a Green Bay Packers and NFL enthusiast, Im unsure of what I should be less surprised about. Should I be less surprised that Favre would contemplate another post-retirement comeback or that the media is already starting “Favre to make NFL return” stories despite him never saying that publicly. Former teammate Ryan Longwell(notes) insists that Favre is at peace with his family and newfound life.

Personally, my trust has waned on the media as it seems like theyre just doing everything possible to survive this lockout. It feels like theyre changing the NFL lockout story everyday just so they have something to write about. Im unsure of what to believe anymore, really. These rumors seem like another tactic they can use while the NFL figures things out. I dont think theyre anything more than scuttlebutt.

But lets assume that Favre is considering a comeback. The Minnesota Vikings figured that Favre would be the final piece to a talented roster thats biggest weakness was at quarterback. Their analysis was almost accurate as Favre led the Vikings to the 2010 NFC Championship (2009-2010 season). Favres fourth-quarter interceptions proved to be fatal in their hopes of a Super Bowl XLIV appearance.

I couldnt see any team envisioning Favre as the final piece to a championship team heading into 2011. Favre had one of his worst seasons after posting a QB rating just below 70.0 and missing games due to injury, ending his streak of 297 consecutive starts. The Seattle Seahawks are the only playoff team whod even consider a quarterback change,tenue ajax, and they were 7-9 last season.

The Tennessee Titans and Cincinnati Bengals would appear to be the most ideal suitors because they could use a veteran quarterback while Andy Dalton(notes) and Jake Locker(notes) adjust to the NFL. However, would Favre consider playing from teams who are far from championship caliber just for the sake of playing?

The most ideal circumstance that I could see is if a Super Bowl contender lost their starting quarterback late in the season, especially in the NFC South or AFC South. How would Favre be responding to a life without football by December? Would Favre make a late-season comeback if a team didnt have much confidence in their backup quarterback but were in the playoff race?

Id be shocked if Favre were playing Week 1. Id say theres a slim chance that hed play if a championship contender needed him late in the season. Personally, Id prefer that he stay retired and let his legacy rest as is. However, I wont think any less of Favre if he does continue playing since he loves football and that would mean that there are still people who are willing to pay millions for his services.

Might as well milk it for all its worth.

NFL fans have flocked back to their teams in greater numbers both in person and on television. It seems the NFL lockout is a distant memory. Here are five reasons to forget the lockout ever happened in the first place.

New Faces

Rookies seem to be doing well in 2011 despite their teams flaking out. Cam Newton(notes) of the Carolina Panthers is second in the NFL in passing yardage. Newton also has over 300 yards rushing. Andy Dalton(notes) of the Cincinnati Bengals isnt putting up meteoric numbers, but after seven games his team is 5-2 going into a tough part of the schedule. Both quarterbacks will be consistent performers in the NFL if they stay healthy.

Parity

There are eight divisions in the NFL. Five of those divisions have three of four teams with a winning record. Three divisions have three teams a game or less within each other for the top spot after Week 8. Some teams started strong and then faltered. Others got off to bad starts but have since moved up. With one exception in the NFC West, every division leader has a two game lead or less midway through the season.

Records

Sept. 12 saw placekicker Sebastian Janikowski(notes) tie an NFL record with a 63-yard field goal against the Denver Broncos. A day earlier,la galaxy soccer, Newton broke Peyton Mannings(notes) single-game rookie record for yardage in a game. Even though the Panthers lost to the Arizona Cardinals, Newton might be on pace to break the seasonal record, also set by Manning in 1998.

Attendance

ESPN reports attendance is up in several stadiums so far. In 2010, 19 stadiums were filled to 95 percent capacity. The worst home attendance was in Oakland where 46,431 people showed up per game. The 2011 season has been surprisingly better. So far, 21 stadiums are filled to 95 percent or greater and another in Oakland is 94.7 percent filled. The lowest average attendance this year is in Cincinnati at 45,524. After that,jacket real madrid, the next worst attendance is 54,premiership football shirts,700 in Tampa Bay. Four teams under 60,000 per game attendance so far. In 2010, there were five. There doesnt seem to be an appreciable drop in attendance whatsoever despite the lockout.

TV Ratings

The 17.1 rating was the best since 2009 with the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers.

Ticket prices $1 for 2 and under. $7 for Senior Citizens and youth 3 to 16 years of age. $8 for 17 to 54 years of age. Besides an Olympic size pool,shirts kopen, they have a 320 foot high water tree and a kiddie splash pool. The pool and slide can even be rented for special occasions.

Roxana Pool(618-254-8914)

Roxana is located just outside the Alton city limits. Children ages 4 and under are free. Ages 5 to 17 is $4. 18 and older is $5. The pool can be rented in the evenings from 6:30 to 9 pm and Saturday mornings from 10 am to noon. Regular hours vary on weather conditions. However,red bull home, most days they are open at 10 am. season passes are also available for both residents and non residents.

These three outdoor swimming pools are great places for the entire family. Swimming lessons are offered. However, you have to inquire about times and prices. I have used all three and recommend them to anyone.

I watch Ivanovic searching for signs that her game has returned to the form that had her at World No. 1. While they appear in flashes, they are never consistent enough. I will look again for them, but if not on fire, Ana will end her U.S. Open run against the winner of Williams vs. Azarenka.

Vera Zvonareva vs. Sabine Lisicki

The No. 22 seed Lisicki still needs to win her Friday match over unseeded American Irina Falconi, but shouldnt face too many problems moving ahead. If she does, No. 2 seed Zvonareva awaits, having already advanced to the fourth-round. Lisicki is having a breakout year after recovering from injury, and will likely grab the upset.

Shaui Peng against Flavia Pennetta

These two will be playing as a result of matches I would have predicted to have gone the other way. Peng defeated Julia Georges in straight sets, and Pennetta took out Maria Sharapova in three. Sharapova battled valiantly, but her serve wasnt up to par. Maria served up a dozen double faults in the match to help give Pennetta the edge.

We could also see Jelena Jankovic against Francesca Schiavone and possibly Caroline Wozniacki taking on Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The Lynx had less difficulty against the Mercury in the playoffs, winning 95-67 in Game 1 and 103-86 in Game 2.

The Lynx have been in the WNBA for 13 years and have only made three appearances in the playoffs. This WNBA Finals will be the first for Minnesota. Despite the struggles, Sergio is talented and young enough to win one, if not multiple majors during the remainder of his career. His best years may still be ahead of him as consistency on the greens still eludes him. If he can mentally get past the demons he has on the golf course when it comes to putting, then he will contend for years to come.

Mountain

Heavenly opens Nov. 18. The largest resort in California, it has an impressive 4,800 acres of ski-able terrain and a 3,500-foot vertical drop. Its more than roomy enough with their 94 trails to keep you going all day. The mountain straddles California and Nevada, so you can ski in two states in the same day. I found the Nevada side to be less crowded than the California side,italian t shirts, and it even had better snow. Its best for intermediates and experts because the beginner runs get super crowded and more difficult to navigate through the linking advanced trails.

Prices

Adult lift tickets can be purchased online for as much as $88 during peak season. The price is definitely steep compared to other resorts (and you will pay more if you wait until arrival), but you can find some good deals with their ski-and-stay discounts. Children under 5 are free. Older children will cost you $35-$79, depending on age and date of visit.

Kids

Heavenly offers daycare for children 6 weeks to 6 years old. My husband and I have used the daycare for our baby and the ski/play program for our preschooler. The ski/play program gives the children a one-hour ski lesson before having them play at the day care center. They also have two-hour ski clinic for children 4 to 5 years old.

Recommendation: Call ahead for advance reservations to save $25 a kid.

Lodging

The best deal is their “Heavenly on the House” special. Heavenly manages several properties that offer free lift tickets with your stay (you must stay a minimum of three days). Less than 100 yards away from Heavenly Ski Gondola, the Forest Suites Resort is one of the least expensive places to stay so close to the slopes. The rooms are a little outdated, but you will find the suites perfectly spacious. The $125 per night ski package and full kitchen are selling points for me. Its also close to the casinos and restaurants, so you will have plenty to do after the lifts close.

Note: I have been skiing for ten years, and I enjoy traveling to many different resorts. I rarely buy season passes because I dont like to limit myself to just one place.

Starting the 2011 season, Arizona Diamondbacks left-fielder Gerardo Parra(notes) was only working hard to make sure he could start every night since he was entering his third season.

It looks like the hard work paid off.

Parra won his first Gold Glove for left-field with a .990 fielding average and 12 outfield assists.

To me, Parra quietly gunned down runners from left field and fans in Arizona saw every play and appreciated when manager Kirk Gibson called Parras arm a “weapon.”

Out of the twelve assists, Parras most impressive plays where against the Atlanta Braves on May 18, when he had two in one inning. Parra threw out both Chipper Jones(notes) and Dan Uggla(notes) at third. Jones said at the time,stand bayern munchen, “The first one wasnt good enough from the 376 sign. But the second one, running in barehanded, was even better. We (Jones and Uggla) just tried to be a little aggressive,shirt manchester united, and he got the best of us there.”

Parras defense early in the season was part of the spark that propelled the Diamondbacks to win the West. After the two assist game on May 18, the Diamondbacks won 15 of 18 games to move into first place and a season long race with the San Francisco Giants.

The 2011 baseball season is here. For the Philadelphia Phillies, anything short of a World Series ring would be a major disappointment. The team invested a ton of money in pitching. They have four true aces on the same staff.

However, despite the importance of pitching, there is one name no Phillies fan wants to see on the disabled list. Despite the rash of injuries during spring training, Ryan Howard(notes) is still healthy. It will need to stay that way. Howard is a quiet force in the game of baseball. He is one of the best offensive players in baseball since 2006.

Here are a few reasons why Ryan Howard is the most important player on the roster:

1. Depth
I dont want to think about it, but the Phillies can probably weather some time with one of the aces on the DL. They also proved they can survive stretches without Utley last season, when Wilson Valdez(notes) filled in nicely. However, the Phillies dont really have a plan to replace Howard if he goes down. Ross Gload(notes) is a fine player, but he cant be this teams everyday first baseman. There is no one on this roster than replace Howards batting prowess.

2. Power
Howard only hit 31 home runs last year. I say “only” because that is less than his normal output. Howard had hit over 40 home runs each season between 2006 and 2009. He has hit 229 home runs over the last five years. That is a staggering number. He consistently ranks near the top of the majors in home runs. Again, there is no current Phillie who can even come close to those numbers. Even with all his strikeouts, Howard is imposing in the batting order.

3. Run Production
Ryan Howard has won the National League RBI title three times in the past five years. He has finished no lower than fourth in the league during that stretch. In a league that includes Albert Pujols(notes), that cant be said enough. Howards run production is unmatched. The Phillies can score, but they are aging. They already lost one run producing machine in Jayson Werth(notes). Even with a healthy Raul Ibanez(notes), they still need Howard to get the runs across the plate.

4. Clutch Hitting
Yes,roma shirt, Howard stared at the last strike of the NLCS. He was pretty dreadful during the postseason last year. However, history says that Howard turns it on down the stretch. Without fail,newcastle football shop, his numbers improve significantly in September. He was also clutch prior to the 2009 World Series. Remember, he was the MVP of the 2009 NLCS. The Phillies have gotten clutch hitting from other sources, most notably Carlos Ruiz(notes). However, Howard is as reliable a bat as anyone in baseball during the home stretch.

5. Leadership
There is a reason the Phillies gave Howard $25 million a year, and its not just home runs. While players like Utley and Jimmy Rollins(notes) are set in their ways, Howards game continues to evolve. His power numbers were lower last year,t shirt party, but he also improved as a hitter. He had 29 fewer strikeouts in 2010 than he did in 2009. He learned to hit singles with consistency. Other pitchers know that this batting order has holes.

If Howard can continue to modify his game, he will inspire his other teammates to do the same.
